I have a nine year old niece. I don’t see very much of her because I live in Montana, and she lives in Kentucky. She is the daughter of my brother, the man who also happens to be my biggest fan. He has always supported and encouraged me, been proud of my work, cheered my successes and been a shoulder to cry on in the face of failure and hard times. He admires my spirit and never fails to tell me how proud our parents would have been of me. I am so grateful for him.
Earlier this year, my brother asked me to make a more concerted effort to be a role model for his daughter. She is growing up. He wants her to grow up to be smart and strong, good and kind, and with an adventurous spirit. He asked me, if I would start writing to her. I agreed instantly, feeling rather ashamed that I hadn’t thought to do so myself without being asked.
I have gotten better at writing to her. And as the year draws to a close I am thinking of one final letter and gift for her — a calendar. I have based this on some of the essential virtues for a girl and for an artist. Character. Contentment. Creativity. And so on… Many of these are long time favorite quotes of mine.
Here are the 12 photos and quotes I picked, but I will be looking for more next year. I think this will make a lovely annual gift. So, if you have any quotes for a young lady, words to inspire, and uplift and edify, please share them.
Incidentally, the calendar does not have my name stamped on every page. But this is the internet age and we must protect our images… Such is life.
P.S. If you are one of those people who gets curious about design, the fonts in these photos are Optima Regular (I always use this because it is the font for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington DC — my father’s name is not carved into those stones (thank God or else I would not be here) but that is his war, and I use this font as one small tribute to him. The embellished font is called Al Fresco Regular. It was found for me by Ashley Levya of Studio Y the wonderful young lady who designed my website for me.
